At UC San Diego, Convocation formally marks the moment in which new and transfer students officially become Tritons. It is a joyful celebration as students begin an exciting new educational journey at one of the top-ranked public institutions in the world.
This year, we were especially pleased to join together in person to celebrate our new students. Each and every one of them is uniquely qualified to be here and contributes meaningful talents, perspectives and experiences to this vibrant and inclusive Triton community.

During the ceremony, I encouraged students to get involved in their campus community, as studies show that the more involved students are, the better they perform academically. I reminded them to get to know their professors and fellow students, as they are surrounded by some of the brightest minds in the world. And, I mentioned the remarkable accomplishments of many notable alumni, but encouraged each new student to blaze a new path instead of following in the footsteps of others.
The "College Roll Call" is a tradition at UC San Diego's annual Convocation Ceremony. Which college had the most spirit this year? You be the judge.
Our students belong to both the wider Triton community and the tight-knit community of an individual college. During the traditional roll call for each college, students competed enthusiastically for the loudest and most spirited cheers. This college pride was quite evident during the ceremony, and it was inspiring to see how connected our students already were to their new communities. We are delighted to welcome them to their UC San Diego Triton family – forever.
On behalf of the faculty and staff, we are so honored that our new and transfer students chose UC San Diego. They made the right decision. This educational journey will challenge and change them – and in turn, it will empower them to better our world.
Let’s make it an outstanding year.
