Tuesday marked the official kick-off of the 2021-2022 academic year with UC San Diego’s annual convocation for new students. Looking out across thousands of students for this milestone moment for the first time in two years, I felt a tremendous sense of pride and accomplishment that we had arrived at this moment.
Historically, this day has been a celebration of the formal entry of first year and transfer students into the Triton community. This year, however, we celebrated two cohorts – those who started last fall, and those who started just last week. Our transfer and first-year students are just beginning their UC San Diego experience. Our second-year students brought a year of Triton experience with them. For everyone who attended, this was the first time they were able to assemble on campus. Their optimism and enthusiasm were palpable.
Convocation is an important event for our students. It is the moment that their experience as Tritons truly begins. It is the moment they begin an academic journey that will challenge them, encourage them to stretch and nurture in them a passion and confidence that will help them succeed academically, and in life. It is the moment they join a long tradition of excellence and tradition, and a campus community that is as unique and distinct as they are. I cannot wait to see where their journeys take them. I am honored they have chosen to start their journey here.
