UC San Diego is a leader in the effort to stop human trafficking. Yesterday, leaders from academia, industry and government gathered on campus to raise awareness and find solutions to the global crisis. Chancellor Khosla provided opening remarks at the “No More No More” human trafficking awareness program, which featured a keynote speech from San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan and a panel discussion on the topic. The Chancellor talked about the university’s partnerships and the involvement of students, faculty and staff, to create awareness and help our community members become defenders and ambassadors in the fight against human trafficking. He also affirmed the university’s commitment to lead way in solving some of today’s greatest social inequities through collaboration and empowerment.

Chancellor Khosla is one of several UC San Diego campus leaders and alumni who have been named among San Diego’s most influential business leaders by the San Diego Business Journal. The San Diego 500 recognizes experts in various fields – from education to leadership – who raise the level of the industry here and beyond, and business people who lead in the community. Other campus leaders included on the list are Rady School of Management Dean Robert Sullivan, Associate Vice Chancellor of Public Programs and Dean of Extension at UC San Diego Mary Walshok, and Executive Director of the California Institute of Innovation and Development at UC San Diego Lada Rasochova.

An official building dedication ceremony was held yesterday to announce the newly named T. Denny Sanford Medical Education and Telemedicine Center. Chancellor Khosla said the naming recognizes Denny Sanford’s generosity and influential role in sparking research and collaboration across the health sciences through the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center. The Chancellor also pointed out that Denny Sanford has supported many areas of campus, from education and youth programs to pioneering research in regenerative medicine. In recognition of Sanford’s contributions and impacts on our community, the City of San Diego will proclaim December 23 as “Denny Day” in San Diego.
