In his first-ever visit to San Diego, His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Mired Raad Zeid Al-Hussein of Jordan spent time on the UC San Diego campus to learn about the range of our research, education and public service. Over the course of two days, he met with several faculty members and campus leaders, including Chancellor Khosla. His visit to campus included stops at the Moores Cancer Center and the Center of Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archaeology (CISA3), and he attended a Global Health Initiative sponsored symposium.
HRH Prince Al-Hussein was officially welcomed to San Diego upon his arrival last week at a gala hosted by a Southern California non-profit humanitarian organization focused on the Middle East. HRH has spent a large part of his post-military career supporting humanitarian and charitable causes. At the gala, Mayor Bob Filner presented HRH with the key to the City of San Diego.
“I am truly amazed at what these staff members have done. The work of these 10 award recipients, and the collective efforts of all staff at UC San Diego, are invaluable to our success as a university and community resource.” – Chancellor Khosla speaking at the award ceremony
At the annual Exemplary Staff Employees of the Year Award ceremony yesterday, Chancellor Khosla congratulated the 10 honorees and thanked them for their hard work and contributions to our campus and community. This year’s award recipients were selected from 114 nominations, and they represent a broad range of campus areas – from youth education and outreach to marine biology research. “When I arrived on this campus, I was jaw-droppingly amazed at the number of sustainability projects here and the commitment of our campus members to our green initiatives. We are coming up with innovative practices, implementing them and showing the world how it’s done.” – Chancellor Khosla speaking at the Sustainability Town Hall
Sustainability is an important part of who we are and what we do at UC San Diego, and it was the focus of a Town Hall meeting today. The gathering was held as part of the unit- and department-level assessments associated with the campus-wide strategic planning process currently underway. At the beginning of the session, Chancellor Khosla thanked the attendees for being a part of the discussion and helping to ensure a sustainable campus, now and well into the future. The event organizers then talked about the accomplishments that led the campus to become one of the greenest in the nation and participants brainstormed new ways to maintain our leadership in sustainability.
