Making Connections

Marshall College breakfast

Chancellor Khosla visited all six of UC San Diego’s colleges this fall to meet with staff and faculty, a tradition he began more than five years ago.  At each breakfast meeting, he was briefed on the college’s achievements, programming, opportunities and challenges.  The groups also discussed issues ranging from the campus transformation and parking, to the streamlining of our undergraduate curriculum and visioning for a 7th College. At each meeting, the Chancellor shared how much he values the ideas and input he receives from our campus members.

Moving to Division 1 Athletics

UC San Diego is joining the Big West Conference, paving the way for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I reclassification.  The announcement was made at a news conference at RIMAC Arena.  The Chancellor said this move has been a long time coming for our Tritons and Triton family, and it was made possible by our students who initiated and voted for the Division I referendum, and our Academic Senate and faculty members who endorsed the move.  He also noted this move will significantly increase UC San Diego’s visibility, elevate the student experience, enhance our sense of community, and heighten our school pride and unity.  Read more about this exciting news.

Celebrating UC San Diego Founders and Faculty

Founders Cake Party

UC San Diego is officially 57 years old.  Founded on November 18, 1960, the campus commemorates the anniversary every year with Founders Celebration.  This year’s series of events included Founders Symposium, Founders Faculty Celebration and a Founders cake party.

The symposium’s theme was “An Evening of Nonconventional Wisdom” and featured two presenters – Professors Tajana Rosing and Rob Knight – who shared their revolutionary research.  Three Revelle Medals were awarded at the Founders Faculty Celebration to recognize visionary faculty with a record of accomplishment in advancing UC San Diego’s mission; the recipients are Paul Drake, Marilyn Farquhar and Don Helinski.  Hundreds of campus members also enjoyed UC San Diego birthday cake on Library Walk.
