Giving Hope for a Better Future

Malin Burnham, Larry Goldstein, T. Denny Sanford, David Brenner, Chancellor Khosla

An official building dedication ceremony was held yesterday to announce the newly named T. Denny Sanford Medical Education and Telemedicine Center.  Chancellor Khosla said the naming recognizes Denny Sanford’s generosity and influential role in sparking research and collaboration across the health sciences through the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center.  The Chancellor also pointed out that Denny Sanford has supported many areas of campus, from education and youth programs to pioneering research in regenerative medicine.  In recognition of Sanford’s contributions and impacts on our community, the City of San Diego will proclaim December 23 as “Denny Day” in San Diego.

Message from the Chancellor and Academic Senate Chair Regarding Fires in San Diego County

Our hearts and thoughts go out to all of those affected by the fires in San Diego County, including many in our UC San Diego family. We ask our entire campus community to be flexible as employees and students need to evacuate their homes, ensure the safety and care of their family members and pets, and/or shelter in place to avoid traveling through the fire zones.

We recognize this is a stressful situation for many, especially with this being the last week of classes and with finals taking place next week. Compassion is so important during this time, and we urge faculty to demonstrate flexibility and take student needs into consideration this week and through finals week.

The UC San Diego campus is not in immediate danger and remains open. Classes will continue as scheduled. The UC San Diego Health System hospitals and clinics also remain open.

We want to assure parents and families that we continue to monitor the progression of the fire, and we have plans in place if the need arises to take further measures. For up-to-date information on the fires and available resources, visit the San Diego County Emergency website at Please stay safe.

Making Connections

Marshall College breakfast

Chancellor Khosla visited all six of UC San Diego’s colleges this fall to meet with staff and faculty, a tradition he began more than five years ago.  At each breakfast meeting, he was briefed on the college’s achievements, programming, opportunities and challenges.  The groups also discussed issues ranging from the campus transformation and parking, to the streamlining of our undergraduate curriculum and visioning for a 7th College. At each meeting, the Chancellor shared how much he values the ideas and input he receives from our campus members.
