Chancellor Khosla with Mayor Kevin Faulconer and UC San Diego Dean of Extension Mary Walshok at Malcolm X Library
UC San Diego is committed to serving our local community through education and research. That is why we are partnering with the City of San Diego to expand our Network of Education x Training (Library NExT) pilot program, which provides middle and high school students with unique opportunities and classes in STEAM education at local libraries, as well as college planning, test preparation and workforce development. Chancellor Khosla and Mayor Kevin Faulconer talked today about the success of the pilot program—which began at the Central Library in downtown San Diego—before announcing the expansion to more libraries in diverse communities throughout our region, including Malcolm X Library. So far, the program has reached more than 150 students from 32 different middle and high schools.

Last week, Chancellor Khosla participated in a special flag-raising ceremony at the UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest—along with several dignitaries including California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and City of San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer—which kicked off the lighting of the building in rainbow colors. The medical center will be illuminated each night through the month of July and is the only hospital in the nation that lights up in rainbow colors. The lights celebrate LGBT Pride Month and symbolize the university’s commitment and engagement in the LGBT community.
“You make UC San Diego a better place. This is your home. You are always welcome here.” – Chancellor Khosla
UC San Diego is proud of our more than 9,000 newest alumni who graduated this weekend. Approximately 25,000 graduates and family members attended UC San Diego’s All Campus Commencement on Saturday, where His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama shared important wisdom during his keynote speech. He told our graduates that they are the future of humanity, and it’s up to them to create a better and happier world. Chancellor Khosla said His Holiness’s message of compassion inspires us to be better caretakers of the world and better caretakers of each other, and he expressed his pride in our graduates’ achievements. He also urged our graduates to make a positive impact on our world, as only Tritons can. Watch the All Campus Commencement ceremony.
