UC San Diego is partnering with IBM Research to advance the use of artificial intelligence to enhance the quality of life and independence for aging populations.  The multi-year collaboration, which is creating the new Artificial Intelligence for Healthy Living Center at UC San Diego, was announced yesterday at a signing ceremony.  Chancellor Khosla said he’s excited to bring together the diverse strengths and disciplines of UC San Diego and IBM to promote critical research and applications for healthy aging and the human microbiome.  He noted the ultimate goal is to enable older adults to live independently longer and have a higher quality of life.  Read Chancellor Khosla’s blog entry on the IBM website.

Providing More Housing for Students

The first phase of UC San Diego’s new Mesa Nueva Housing project is now open and students are already moving in.  Yesterday, Chancellor Khosla joined Dean of the Graduate Division Kit Pogliano, Graduate Student Association President Mark Derdzinski and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Housing, Dining and Hospitality Mark Cunningham to celebrate the new graduate and professional student community.  The Chancellor talked about the importance of adding housing to enhance the student experience, build a sense of community and provide a four-year housing guarantee, which will help to recruit and retain the best students.  He also emphasized Mesa Nueva Housing is part of our overall efforts to transform our campus, physically and intellectually.

Once the entire project is complete, Mesa Nueva will house nearly 5,000 graduate students.  Additionally, the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood, which will break ground in the coming months and be the new home for Sixth College, will add 2,000 beds for undergraduates.

After the ribbon-cutting, more than 1,200 students gathered on the rooftop lounge to get to know each other and enjoy live music and entertainment.

Welcoming New Tritons

“You have the potential to change the world.” – Chancellor Khosla

UC San Diego’s Welcome Week is fostering Triton Spirit for our new and returning students.  The week includes events like the New Student Welcome Convocation and Dinner, Triton Power Hour and the UnOlympics.  Last night at Convocation, Chancellor Khosla talked about UC San Diego’s efforts to enhance the student experience—including adding more housing, degree programs and amenities—and encouraged students to seize opportunities while on campus.  He told the students they are only limited by their imaginations and urged them to blaze their own trails.
