Last week, UC San Diego received approval on two important initiatives at the spring meeting of the UC Board of Regents, the governing board of the University of California.
Recognizing that our current six colleges have exceeded their designed capacity, the Academic and Student Affairs Committee approved a motion to establish a new Seventh College at UC San Diego. The committee approval is a watershed step in the process to gain approval for the new college. Next up, on June 4, the Academic Senate will vote on the Academic Plan. Our goal is to open Seventh College in the fall of 2020.
The Finance and Capital Strategies Committee approved the design for Franklin Antonio Hall—a new 187,000-square-foot building that will house laboratories, classrooms, faculty offices, meeting space, and a new auditorium and café. Designed to foster collaborations between various fields of research via shared laboratories and work areas, Franklin Antonio Hall is scheduled to open in the summer of 2021.
As a discussion point, I also informed the Regents that UC San Diego is now planning for another future college living and learning neighborhood, similar to the North Torrey Pines Living and Learning Neighborhood now under construction and set to open in fall 2020.
The project would locate new undergraduate student housing together with a new college, thereby increasing housing while also decompressing our current over capacity colleges.
Our strategy aims to reduce the number of students per college, guarantee four years of housing to every undergraduate student and provide housing that is 20 percent below market rate pricing.
Creation of affordable on-campus housing in a collaborative, interdisciplinary living and learning environment was identified in the 2018 Long Range Development Plan as critical to achieving UC San Diego’s vision to be a student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university.
