Surfing for a Cure

Sam Armstrong, Chancellor Khosla, Dr. John Mendelsohn

The 24th annual Luau & Legends of Surfing Invitational was held recently to benefit the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.  Dozens of surfers participated in the tournament and more than 500 people enjoyed traditional Polynesian dancing, music and a tropical buffet.  Among the attendees was surfing world champion Kelly Slater, who also served as Honorary Chair.  This year’s Rell Sunn Award was presented to John Mendelsohn, founding director of the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center.  Since its inception, the event has raised over $8 million for cancer research and care.

Lunching with the Chancellor

Chancellor Khosla hosted 10 staff members for lunch in his office yesterday as part of the annual Chancellor’s Lunchbox Club.  The staff were invited after having their names chosen from a drawing at the All Staff Picnic.  The Chancellor says this is one of his favorite campus traditions because it gives him an opportunity to converse with staff members from diverse areas across campus in a casual setting and he can personally thank staff for the work that they do to support the university.

This year’s lunchbox design was created by Dave Decaro, Director of Marketing for Housing, Dining and Hospitality, who continued the nontradition at UC San Diego with the unique artwork.  Each lunch guest got to take home their commemorative lunchbox.

UC San Diego Statement: Response to This Weekend’s Tragic Events in Virginia

Like many of you, we, the UC San Diego administration, watched this weekend’s horrific incidents unfold in Virginia with a mix of outrage, frustration and sorrow. We condemn this vile display of inhumanity, hatred and violence; extend our condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives and were injured; and stand in solidarity with our colleagues at the University of Virginia. We extend our support to all members of our campus community, particularly those who feel the impact of this hatred most acutely. Read the entire statement.
