Institute of the Americas: The Role of the Research University in Economic Development

This speech was delivered at the Institute of the Americas on Jan. 29, 2013 and can be viewed here.  Chancellor Khosla traces the development of the research university following World War II and talks about the importance of government investment in research.  He points out the role of research universities in being agents of change that help to spur economic growth by creating new industries and jobs and attracting resources and talent.  He emphasizes UC San Diego's role in our county's economic development, citing the more than 650 spin-off companies established by UC San Diego faculty, staff and alumni.
