Raffi Aroian is a professor in Biological Sciences. His laboratory researches the basic biology of infectious diseases and is actively seeking new cures for them. The researchers have three areas of focus: developing new biologically-based cures for intestinal parasitic roundworms; understanding the mechanism of action of bacterial pore-forming toxins and how the body protects against them; and understanding how target pests develop resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis crystal proteins in order to protect this valuable natural resource. Photo of Kimberly Brouwer Kimberly Brouwer
Kimberly Brouwer is an associate professor in the Division of Global Public Health. She is pursuing research in the spatial and molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases. Her interests lie in studying the dynamic between the host and environment, and how this relates to susceptibility to and spread of infections. She is currently collaborating with Mexican officials in studies of HIV/AIDS and injection drug use in cities along the Mexico/U.S. border, in an effort to inform public health interventions. More…

Kevin Patrick is a professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and he is the director of the Center for Wireless and Population Health Systems at Calit2. He is also Editor-in-Chief for the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. His research focuses on the use of information and telecommunications technology to measure and improve health-related behaviors of individuals and populations. He has served on the Secretary’s Council for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention of the US Department of Health and Human Services and on the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board. More…

Roddey Reid is a professor of French Studies and Cultural Studies and is affiliated faculty of the Science Studies Program and the Critical Gender Studies Program at UC San Diego. He is an interdisciplinary scholar working at the intersection of French studies, science studies, communication, history and cultural studies. His teaching and scholarship focus on the history of modern cultures and societies from the perspective of the changing ways in which citizenship, selfhood, and the life of the body are shaped by particular cultural forms, governmental policies, medical and scientific knowledge, globalization and public health, and social movements. Photo of Douglas Richman Douglas Richman
Douglas Richman is a professor of Pathology and Medicine. He trained in infectious diseases and medical virology with research on influenza virus, herpes viruses and hemorrhagic fever viruses before focusing on HIV in the 1980s. HIV drug resistance was originally recognized in his laboratory in 1988. In addition to his continuing interest in HIV treatment and drug resistance, his research interests have focused on HIV pathogenesis including the issues of viral latency and evolution. More…

Nayan Shah is an associate professor in the Department of History. He specializes in Asian American history, United States cultural and political history, race and sexual politics. More specifically, Shah has expertise in the history of public health and medicine, in the history of race, ethnicity and gender in the U.S. West, the history of the experiences of Asian immigrants to the United States and Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries; and the historical context of gender and sexual identities in the United States. Steffanie Strathdee is associate dean of Global Health Sciences, a Harold Simon professor and chief of the Division of Global Public Health in the Department of Medicine. She is an infectious disease epidemiologist who has spent the last two decades focusing on HIV prevention in underserved, marginalized populations in developed and developing countries. Currently, she is engaged in research projects in a number of HIV prevention projects in international settings including Mexico, Brazil, Canada and Afghanistan. More…

Natalia M. Molina
Natalia Molina is an associate professor of Ethnic Studies. She is interested in how social and cultural values shape our understandings of issues of disease and health, especially in regards to how they intersect with race and gender. Specifically, she researches the institution of public health and demonstrates how through their programs, discourse, and production of knowledge, public health officials in Los Angeles at the turn of the last century imbued meaning into the categories Mexican, Chinese, and Japanese.
